Hiking
in Jenner
There are an abundance
of hiking and walking trails scattered along the Sonoma coastline.
One of our favorite hiking areas is Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve,
which is only a 15 minute drive from Jenner. Here you will find a
spectacular old growth Redwood forest with a variety of trails for
walkers, beginners and advanced hikers.
The following
list provides some general information and phone numbers for many
of the hiking and recreation areas close by. We strongly recommend
that you call before planning any trips since some of the information
provided is subject to change.
Annadel
State Park: 5,000 acres, 6201 Channel Drive, off Montgomery
Drive, Santa Rosa, (707) 539-3911. Hiking, mountain biking, equestrian
trails, picnicking, fishing. Lake Ilsanjo, shady forests and sunny,
flowery meadows. Parking $2.
Armstrong
Redwoods State Reserve: 752 acres, 17000 Armstrong Woods
Road, two miles north of Guerneville. District office: (707) 865-2391;
park: (707) 869-2015. Hiking and nature trails among tallest trees
in Sonoma County (many of them more than 2,000 years old), bicycling
on paved roads, horseback riding, picnic areas. Parking $2.
Doran
Park: 150 acres, on Doran Park Road, south of Bodega Bay,
on spit separating bay from Pacific Ocean, (707) 875-3540. Spectacular,
scenic cliffs; access to sandy coves; vantage points for observing
migrating gray whales. Picnic areas, campgrounds, bird walk, nature
study area, boat launch, beach, horseback riding on the beach, coastal
access for fishing, clamming and surfing. Parking $3.
Hood
Mountain Regional Park: 1,450 acres, east on Sonoma Highway
(12) and north of Kenwood, (707) 565-2041. Panoramic views of Valley
of the Moon from 2,700-foot summit. Equestrian, hiking trails. Open
weekends, county holidays only. Park closed during summer fire season.

Jack
London State Historic Park: 837 acres, 1.5 miles west of
Glen Ellen on London Ranch Road, (707) 938-5216. Hiking, nature trail,
equestrian trail, self-guided history trail, author's grave, Wolf
House ruins, museum, historic buildings. Hiking among historic ranch
buildings on Sonoma Mountain with views of redwood forests, vineyards,
Sonoma Valley. Call for hours. Parking $3 general, $2 seniors.
Kruse
Rhododendron State Reserve: 317 acres, next to Salt Point
State Park, 20 miles north of Jenner on Highway 1, (707) 847-3221.
Hiking trails among second-growth redwood forest with Douglas firs,
grand firs, tan oaks, and rhododendron, which bloom with pink blossoms
in May. Free parking.
Lake
Sonoma/Warm Springs Dam:18,000 acres of federal parkland
and water, 3333 Skaggs Springs Road, off Dry Creek Road, 11 miles
northwest of Healdsburg, (707) 433-9483.
Salt
Point State Park: 5,970 acres, 20 miles north of Jenner on
Highway 1, (707) 847-3221. Hiking, bicycling, camping, picnicking,
fishing, horseback riding, designated underwater area. Coastline hiking,
with grasslands and pine forests. Pygmy Forest, where nutrient-poor
soil has produced mature, stunted Bishop pines, redwoods, cypress
and manzanita. Parking fee $2.
Sea
Ranch Access Trails: Five public trails to beach along Highway
1, between Gualala and Sea Ranch in far northwest corner of county
(no phone number available). Bluffs overlooking Pacific Ocean, abundant
wildflowers in season. Hiking, restrooms. Look for access signs along
highway. Parking $3.
Sonoma
Coast State Beach: 13 miles of coastline along Highway 1
from Russian Gulch to Bodega Head, including Bodega Dunes and Wright's
Beach campgrounds, (707) 865-2391 or 875-3483. Special sites for hikers,
bicyclists, camping, picnicking, fishing, horseback riding, exhibits,
designated underwater areas. Access along Highway 1.
Stillwater
Cove Regional Park: 206 acres, along Highway 1, 16 miles
north of Jenner, (707) 847-3245. Spectacular coastal views. Picnic
areas, campgrounds, fire rings, hot showers, beach, fishing, historic
one-room schoolhouse. Parking $3.
Sugarloaf
Ridge State Park: 2,700 acres, 2605 Adobe Canyon Road, seven
miles east of Santa Rosa, (707) 833-5712. Rugged terrain and views
from mountain peaks. Hiking, horseback riding, camping, picnicking.
Parking $2.
Crane
Creek Regional Park: 128 acres, east of Petaluma Hill Road
on Pressley Road, (707) 527-2041. Oak woodlands, spring wildflower
displays, trails for hikers, bicyclists and equestrians. Parking $3.
Foothill
Regional Park: 230 acres, 3800 Hembree Lane, Windsor, (707)
565-2041. Recreational trails through oaks. Parking $3.
Helen
Putnam Regional Park: 210 acres, off Chileno Valley Road
in Petaluma, (707) 565-2041. Spectacular views, hiking and biking
trails, picnic area, small playground. Parking $3.
Joe
Rodota Trail: Abandoned railroad right-of-way crossing scenic
Laguna de Santa Rosa for 2.9 miles, (707) 565-2041. Trailhead at Petaluma
Avenue, Sebastopol. Two-mile trail runs from Analy High School in
Sebastopol to Highway 116. No parking fee.
Maxwell
Farms Regional Park: 85 acres, at Verano Avenue and Sonoma
Highway (12), Sonoma, (707) 565-2041. Nature trail, bicycle path,
basketball court, tennis courts, volleyball, baseball field, football
and soccer fields, picnic area with barbecues, playground. Parking
$3.
Ragle
Ranch Regional Park: 156 acres, 500 Ragle Road, north of
Bodega Avenue, west of Sebastopol, (707) 565-2041. Hiking and equestrian
trails, bicycle path, soccer fields, volleyball, par course, picnic
area with barbecues, playground, gazebo, tennis courts. Parking $3.
Shiloh
Park: 948 acres, at Faught and Shiloh roads, Windsor, (707)
565-2041. Three miles of trails for hiking, riding. Parking $3.
Soda
Springs Reserve: 40 acres, on Kelley Road, near Annapolis,
(707) 565-2041. Hiking trails, picnicking in redwood preserve. No
parking fee.
Sonoma
Valley Regional Park: 162 acres, off Highway 12, north of
Boyes Hot Springs, (707) 565-2041. Hiking, bicycle and equestrian
trails, picnic areas. Nearby is Bouverie Wildflower Preserve, available
for viewing only from road. Parking $3.
Spring
Lake Park: 320 acres, next to Santa Rosa's Howarth Park and
Annadel State Park, (707) 565-2041. Hiking, equestrian trails, bike
paths plus visitor center with nature walks and displays, par course,
summer swimming, boating, camping and picnicking. Parking $4, May-September;
$3 October-April.
